What Is First Aid?
First Aid is the very first medical assistance of any sort given to anyone suffering from an injury or a disease. The nature of the disease or illness can vary from mild to serious. Similarly, the injury can be minor or major. In either case, it is defined as the immediate help given to the concerned person.
What Is The Purpose Of First Aid?
It can act as a preventive where it slows down or prohibits the injury or the illness from getting worse. While in most cases, it acts as a stopper, in some situations it can also help in recovery by healing the person.
Why Do We Need It?
There are approximately 7 billion people living on the planet today. Hence, it is unrealistic to expect that most of them will have quick access to a hospital or a clinic in case of an injury or an illness. Indeed there are people, who live in rural areas or far-off remote areas for whom it takes hours to find professional medical help.
So what happens when these people have an injury or fall sick? It is exactly in these situations that they need a prior medical assistance of some sort before the professionals can diagnose and treat them. So this is where the functionality of a first aid kicks in.
Since it acts as a temporary solution which gives the concerned person more time to find professional medical help without causing more harm to himself or herself.
One of the most well-known examples is when a patient is given CPR. CPR is short for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and is used on people whose life are in danger. It is given while the patient is having to wait for the ambulance to arrive. It ensures that life of the concerned person is not lost before professional medics can take over.
Treating minor cuts can be another example. It is done with band-aids or with plaster.
Why Do We Need Training?
The technique to first wash the wound with the correct chemicals and then let it dry before covering it is what first aid is important for. Otherwise, people who are not trained might miss such steps and cause more harm to the patient. Processes like CPR also require basic first aid training and should not be done otherwise.
Mental Health Emergency
The concern over the welfare of mental health is growing all across the world. So now medical science firmly believes in having mental health first aid situation. It should be treated before the illness sets in as patients here are in danger of developing mental illnesses like PTSD, it should be treated before the illness sets in.
First Aid Laws
First aid cannot to be taken lightly. It is the most immediate response step to treating patients with illnesses or injuries. Hence, it is compulsory by law in most countries now to have a designated first aid health and safety officer in any public place. So the responsible person will have to earn a certificate in first aid health science.
